iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 have recently been released in developer betas. This is also the case for watchOS 9.3, tvOS 16.3 and macOS 13.2. Let’s see in this article what new features come to enrich the iPhone and the iPad.

Please note that the list described below is based on discoveries made in the first beta versions of iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3. The final versions of these two OS may not contain one or the other of these improvements. Regarding an exit window for these systems for all, let’s aim for the first quarter of 2023 for the moment.

Note that all iPhones and iPads supporting iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 can install iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3.

What changes for iOS and iPadOS 16.3?

  • Support for security keys (beta 1):  security keys can be used instead of a password to identify yourself on the web or for services. Under iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3, they can be used for double-authentication for your Apple ID, for example. This is to support accessories such as the Yubikey from Yubico or the Titan from Google. 
  • Emergency Calls (Beta 2): Beta 2 changes the way you make an emergency call. The current way is to hold the power button held down with a volume button to start a call after countdown. In beta 2, the call is not made immediately after the countdown, but only after the buttons are released. Impossible to say as it stands if this change will be maintained for the final version of iOS 16.3
  • Apple Music (beta 2):  fix for a bug that saw Apple Music automatically launch songs in a so-called “clean” version (lyrics without insults) instead of the original version, with so-called “explicit” lyrics
  • New Wallpapers (RC Beta):  New wallpapers called Unity have been added for Black History Month, an event that runs throughout February and celebrates the history of the African-American population
  • HomePod 2 (beta RC): support for the new HomePod 2 speaker announced in January
  • iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max (beta RC) screen bug: fixed the bug of lines appearing on iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. 
  • Apple HomeKit (beta RC): iOS 16.3 should update the entire HomeKit architecture to improve performance

If you don’t have access to a developer account, you can still try out the latest iOS 16.3 beta. However, we do not recommend that you install a developer beta (if you are not a developer). For a question of risk of data loss and the presence of sometimes very annoying bugs, it is better to wait for the final version of iOS 16.3 or at the limit test a public beta, having always taken care to make a backup of the device, iCloud or computer.
