It did not take more than 10 days after the announcement of the new generation of Apple silicon 2 chip to see the first benchmark results appear on the web. And while Apple announced 25% more graphics performance at equivalent power consumption for the M2 compared to the M1, analysts did not expect to see big gains in raw power from one generation to the next.

The M2 was indeed presented rather as a minor update compared to the SoC introduced in 2020.

In any case, we were eager to discover the first performance tests to see what the component really had in its belly. Well, we now know a little more, thanks to the disclosure of the Geekbench benchmark results.

Up to 19% more performance!

The numbers were seen on Twitter.

Here they are :

  • Single-core score: 1919 points (1720 points for the M1)
  • Multi-core score: 8928 points (7474 points for the M1)

This is about 12% better than what the M1 chip offers in single-core, and 19% more in multi-core . These improvements are notably underpinned by a higher clock frequency for the M2: 3.49 GHz, against 3.2 GHz for the M1.

Note in passing that the single-core M2 does better than the M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra. In multi-core obviously, the M1 Max and the M1 Ultra are well above the M2. But the M1 Pro only shows a 6% gain in CPU score compared to the M2 (9511 points for the M1 Pro).

Note that these are tests focusing only on the CPU part . The GPU part of the M2, according to Apple, should offer a gain of 25% compared to the M1, as announced in the introduction.

We can’t wait to see what the Apple silicon M2 SoC offers in terms of graphics performance, but also, if it underlies any improvement in terms of energy consumption.
