This, dear reader(s), will be one of the few personal posts you will see in this blog. A great many things have been going on in my life as of late–bad things, worse things, time-consuming things and a handful of good things.
I apologize for my lack of updating, but I will post more in the future. I am just not entirely sure as to when.
Beyond the issues that currently exist in my personal life, my day job and my graduate program have been sucking up most of my time. This is the school year in which I must write and complete my thesis.
A lot has happened this month. John Roberts is not only a Supreme Court Justice, but now the head of the High Court. Judith Miller is out of prison. Constance Baker Motley, the lawyer (and then judge) who helped James Meredith become the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi, is dead at 84.
Motley, whom I met in 2002 (see photo) for the 40th anniversary “Open Doors” celebration of this historic event, was also instrumental in the Brown v. Board of Education case in Topeka, which led to the decision that “Separate, but Equal” was unconstitutional.
Tonight, thousands of fans gathered as dozens of celebrities spoke, sang and performed at the “Mississippi Rising” benefit concert for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. This telethon of sorts took place in the very coliseum where I obtained my diploma for my undergraduate degree.
I was asked to cover the event for the Biloxi Sun-Herald, but I declined, giving the opportunity to a young friend of mine.
I realize now that I must bring myself back into the swing of things. Life is, after all, for the living. It’s about time I took part in that again.
